Marchand was from a gold assaying family in Canada and California. In 1862 he was arrested for cheating customers and was sentenced to prison. Soon after he went to Australia and established himself as a photographer there, creating portraits and images of landscapes, winning awards in several exhibitions. He moved back to California in the 1870s and worked again as a photographer and eventually returning to gold mining.
