Cartoonist, illustrator and writer, was born in England but came to Victoria as an infant. He attended schools at Frankston and Lilydale then went to Melbourne Technical College where he learned drawing under Mr Sheldon. He later turned to landscape gardening and was planting advisor to the State Camouflage Committee during WWII. As contractor to the Australia Paper Mills, he selected varieties of timber for papermaking.
By the 1940s he was also drawing strips and caricatures for various country newspapers: see introduction by Brierley in Looking Back on the Early Days (Melbourne: Neptune Oil Company publication, n.d. [1940s?]), of which 25,000 complementary copies promoting Neptune Oil were printed. The illustrations include Captain Cook’s Landing (mundane view), ’1796 – Midday on the “Tom Thumb”’, ’1855 – “Pinch Gut”’, etc. Although all are in drawn in a cartoon style, the subject matter and captions are fairly straight.
