painter and sailor, was a member of the crew of the Milltides which arrived at Melbourne during the 1860s. Alex, as he was called, is said to have broken a leg on the voyage and convalesced at Volum’s Brewery in Geelong. He painted two naive views of the brewery which he gave to two sisters living in the district; one is painted in oils on paper (Geelong Art Gallery), the other on a piece of sail from the Milltides (private collection).
