Anita Maynard is a Tasmanian Aboriginal artist, ceramicist, jewellery maker and graphic designer currently based on Flinders Island, which is in the Furneaux Group of islands of the north coast of Tasmania. In 2003, Maynard participated in the Woollily exhibition, curated by Ricky Maynard at the Carnegie Gallery in Hobart. In the exhibition catalogue, Maynard writes of her graphic work: “Digital art is a natural extension of my love of painting… These new tools, materials and instruments complement our traditional oral history of story telling. This aids in the preservation and diversity of our Aboriginal culture.”
In addition to her work as a painter and graphic designer, Maynard has worked as a playwright and teacher and has advocated for Aboriginal cultural expression and education in a number of capacities: she has served as Deputy Chair of the Riawunna Advisory Board at the University of Tasmania, as Chair of the Regional Advisory Committee advising TAFE Tasmania on Aboriginal training programs, and as a member of the Australia Council’s Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Arts Board.
