B. C. Boutcher is the artistic name for the artist, painter and signwriter Samuel Boutcher. He was born on 23 December 1810 at St Olaves,Surrey, England. He was the third child (and first son) of Samuel Butcher (Snr) an ironmonger, and mother Susan Medreath. Samuel moved to the city of London and lived in Shoredicth marrying into an upper middle class family and becoming a corn dealer and artist. With his wife’s inheritance Samuel’s young family immigrated to Sydney, Australia in April 1855 aboard the Washington Irving
Samuel and family settled in Newcastle until his wife’s death in 1871. In December of 1877 he was advertising in the SMH his services as a portrait artist in Oils. Life size works at a cost of two pounds ten shillings. He was working from 283 Castlereagh Street Sydney. He then lived at 105 Clarence Street Sydney city with his middle daughter Annie M Boutcher (dressmaker).
Samuel is noted in the Sand’s Directories as being a signwriter. It was at this time, just before his death in 1883, that he came to attention at the Art Society of NSW and exhibited there. He is buried at Rookwood cemetery.
