Belynda Bindi Waugh of Yiman descent was born in Queensland in 1957 and is an illustrator, painter, carver and potter. Waugh established Yarwun Pottery in the mid 1990s producing a range of decorated bowls and platters. Her paintings were exhibited in the 2001 Brisbane exhibition “Gatherings, Contemporary Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Art from Queensland, Australia”. Her artist statement in the “Gatherings” catalogue reads, “I feel there has been a lack of acknowledgment that before the introduction of Christianity the Aboriginal people were deeply spiritual. Their beliefs encompassed the creation of the earth, the belief that man had a soul and there was a spiritual life after death. Through my work I would like to remind us all that to disregard a society’s beliefs and to replace them, no matter how well intentioned, damages that society.” Waugh’s work is in private collections in England, South Africa, Israel, German, the United States, the Netherlands and Australia.
