photographer, was mentioned in an undated (c.1854-56) letter of introduction from 'Lord J. Bathurst’ to Sir Charles Hotham (Public Records Office, Laverton, Vic.) recommending two brothers, Benjamin Harrison ('clerk or schoolmaster’) and James Harrison ('pastry-cook and confectioner’) as suitable immigrants to Victoria. It concludes by mentioning that 'one of them can make Daguerrotypes very successfully’. These letters were normally delivered personally by the immigrants although sometimes followed considerably later. Even so this seems far too late for J. Harrison of Van Diemen’s Land. He may, however, be the 1874 Victorian 'J. Harrison’.
