Beverly L. King was born in Kempsey, NSW in 1947. King is an elder of the Dhungutti tribe of the Kempsey area. When signing her acrylic on canvas paintings she uses both her birth name and her “artist” name, Dutjira Barunbatai, meaning “teacher of the dreamtime”. This name was given to her by Uncle Leeton Smith and Great Grand Aunty Rita Scott.

King was educated in Sydney where she was trained as an Aboriginal Education Assistant and Aboriginal Resource Researcher. King was a finalist in the 2005 Parliament of NSW Indigenous Art Prize and states in the accompanying catalogue that her “current goal is to research and express her and her husband’s (a Bundjalung man from Lismore, NSW) tribal history in paintings.
