Born 'in the bush’ in the area near the Stansmore Ranges c.1930, Bill Doonday is a Ngarti speaker. His country is Mangkai (the Stansmore Ranges) and his principal Dreamings belong, like those of most of his Pintupi countrymen further to the east, to the Tingari cycle. He also paints Emu Dreamings. He began painting for Warlayirti Artists in 1989. Bill Doonday’s work is typical of the work of the other men working out of the Mulan community near Balgo, WA. It shows more figurative elements than one would find in the work of the Kukatja artists at Balgo itself. There may be traditional reasons for this; the artist does not connect it to European influences. His work is full of references to Men’s Law.
