painter, was born on the Isle of Man, educated at Westbury College, Wiltshire, and studied art under 'Theodore Roussel, Brun and Toujan’, three celebrated French artists. Gardner arrived in Australia on 24 May 1884 and lived in Brisbane. The Aldine History of Australia , vol.2 (under 'Brisbane’), noted that he was 'artist by special appointment to His Excellency the Governor’, address Hicks Buildings, George Street. He specialised in portraiture, banner and ornamental and heraldic painting.
