Charles Nettleton b. c.1825

  • Artist (Photographer)
A professional photographer, he is generally regarded as the major photographic recorder of Melbourne's growth from settlement to great city. Working as the official photographer to the Victorian government and to the City of Melbourne Corporation, Nettleton's most famous photograph is a portrait of Ned Kelly taken the day before he was hanged.

    The Special Collections, Baillieu Library, University of Melbourne, comprise some 200,000 rare or historic books, serials and pamphlets and literary archives.

    The McArthur Bequest (1903) was the first substantial donation to the University Library, which has been followed by, among others, the Sir Russell Grimwade, Ian McLaren and Clern Christesen collections acquired in the 1970s.
