Exhibiting in group and solo shows since 2005, Charlie Sofo combines a variety of media including sculpture, video, installation, drawing and text.

Primarily concerned with the documentation and cataloguing of experiences – street walks and the variety of odours found in suburbs, the detritus removed from his running shoes, a video catalogue of lounging cats – Sofo’s taxonomic aesthetic is precise and humorous.

A selection of Sofo’s work was included under the title Fields (2010-11) in Unguided Tours: Anne Landa Award for Video and New Media Arts 2011 at the Art Gallery of NSW. Two video components of the installation were Touch (2010-11) – a record of the hands of the artists encountering a variety of natural and manmade textures – and I Wander (2010), a documentation of the artist walking through the backstreets and parks of the Melbourne suburb of Northcote.

The Anne Landa 2011 curator Justin Paton described Sofo’s work as having the “procedural feeling, the one-thing-after-another quality, of early conceptual art”.
