painter, signed an oil view, Pyrmont from Barker’s Mills , in 1859 (Mitchell Library). This is an early industrial scene of factories and houses along the Sydney waterfront. The artist may be William Harvey Christie (1808-73), who lived at Pyrmont from the mid 1850s and was a noted art collector, lending numerous works to the 1847 and 1849 exhibitions mounted by the Society for the Promotion of the Fine Arts in Australia. He is not, however, known to have painted and it seems far more likely that the artist was Mrs Steadman Christie .
