painter and art teacher. Gentle grew up on a farm in Sussex. He studied art at the West Sussex College of Art and then art education at London University.

He arrived in Australia in 1967 and began teaching at Sydney’s National Art School in 1969, then taught at Alexander Mackie College of Advanced Education (later University of New South Wales College of Fine Arts) from 1975 until 1994.

Between 1977 and 1986 he was the inaugural director of the College’s Ivan Dougherty Gallery.

Gentle is known for his landscape paintings, Nevill Drury having once praised his “powerful bond with the dramatic landforms of the Australian outback.”
