painter, exhibited at the 1880 Melbourne International Exhibition: NSW Court – Oil Paintings – no.1 Banning, Clara, 15 Selwyn Street, Moore Park – Landscape Painting. She also showed work at the Art Society of NSW in 1884 and 1886. De Libra noted in 1884: “... we recently noticed there are a couple of works in chalk by Miss Clara Banning, a young artist of some promise, that have been executed as a kind of diploma work on being proposed as a member of the Art Society” ( Sydney Mail 14 June 1884, 111). At the fifth annual exhibiton of the Art Society of NSW the following month De Libra whimsically noted: “Miss Clara Banning, a recently elected member of the society, to whom is apparently attributed a 'Sketch in Copal’ (wherever that locality may be) displays in no.228 an appreciative feeling for English foliage and tree growth” ( Sydney Mail , 26 July 1884, 179).
