cartoonist, began his career with Associated Newspapers in Sydney where he worked from 1936 to 1950. Then he joined Australian Consolidated Press and was political cartoonist on the Daily Telegraph , e.g. “Would one or two little hurrahs be in order if the Russians win?” (Melbourne Olympics joke) 1956 (ill. Lindesay 1979, 283). It and a 1966 gag are very similar to Rigby/Tanner .
An original cartoon of 1965 and another c.1970 are at ML PXD 764. 22 of King’s cartoons drawn for the Daily Telegraph and Sunday Telegraph between October 1970 and June 1972, plus one of February 1981 and an undated example are at ML PXD 739. According to Gilmore, he was famous for his “King Hit” pocket cartoons featured in several papers, including the Telegraph . She also says he retired in 1980. He died of pneumonia in a Belrose nursing home in March 2000, survived by his wife, Norma, son Vance and stepdaughter Deborah Minnici.
