Evatt was the first director of the Hogarth Galleries, Walker Lane, Paddington NSW. It opened in 1972. He exhibited international and local artists and the Gallery later became celebrated for showing Australian Aboriginal art (after 1976). After 1982, Evatt stepped back from direct administration, relying on Helen Hansen, Kerry Williams, Ace Bourke and Melissa Collins as directors.
