professional photographer, had a photographic studio at 81 Queensberry Street, Melbourne, in 1866. Two years later he was in High Street, St Kilda, where he remained until 1891. From 1875 until 1880 his wife assisted in the business. McDonald seems to have exhibited his work regularly: he showed an album of photographs (probably views) at the 1866 Melbourne Intercolonial Exhibition, five cabinet photographs of Melbourne and a portrait photograph of the Duke de Penthievre at the 1869 Melbourne Public Library Exhibition, and two albums of photographs at the 1873 London International Exhibition. In 1867 he photographed Physalis grai (McCoy) New Victorian Whalebone Whale , the skeleton of a 90-foot (27 m) whale found on the beach near Jan Juc in August. Two of his photographs of Melbourne Town Hall (1870) are in the Victorian Copyright Collection (LT).
