lithographer, surveyor and estate agent, set up premises in December 1857 at the corner of Charles and Cameron streets, Launceston. Three months later he advertised in the Launceston Examiner : 'MR. ALLEN having established a Lithograph Press in connection with his Land Mart, is now prepared to print maps, plans, drawings, circulars, &c.’. On 23 April 1857 he advertised for an apprentice lithographer.
Clifford Craig reproduces Allen’s hand-coloured, lithographed sub-division plan of Linnellville (1857, p.c., on view at the National Trust property Franklin House, Cameron Street, Launceston), showing the house and well laid-out garden situated on the top of Cox’s Hill—site of the present nurses’ home of the Launceston General Hospital, between Frankland and French Streets. The house was offered for sale in the Launceston Examiner on 28 March 1857 on behalf of John French, presumably the builder.
