professional photographer, carver and frame-maker, worked as a carver and gilder in Sydney in the 1850s. In January 1863 he was proposing to issue at his shop a set of six photographs of works by Australian artists for 30 shillings. To appear monthly, the first were to be after pencil sketches by F.C. Terry and 'T.S.’ (i.e. S.T. ) Gill . His photograph of The Gap by John Rider Roberts appeared in March, but no others seem to have followed. Baldwin and Roberts together produced a composite image, The Champion Oarsmen of Australia , Baldwin photographing the rowers about to race and Roberts adding the painted background.

Baldwin also took portrait photographs, producing both coloured and uncoloured cartes-de-visite. Mrs Baldwin assisted Edwin in his Hunter Street studio. After January 1865, when he advertised a move to 178 George Street (having decided to devote 'his whole attention to the photography business’), some advertisements referred to the firm as Baldwin Brothers, so at least one other family member may have been involved in it.
