sketcher, was the sister-in-law of Louisa Tomkinson and the eldest daughter of Elizabeth and Charles Tomkinson, a grocer of Denbighshire, North Wales. Miss Tomkinson was awarded the 2-guinea prize for the best watercolour painting of a group of flowers at the annual exhibition of the South Australian Society of Arts in December 1863. Samuel Tomkinson lent an Indian ink drawing by Elizabeth, his sister, to the same exhibition. The following year Miss Tomkinson won a special prize for her watercolour group of flowers which, stated the South Australian Advertiser , was 'carefully painted as usual’ and 'exceedingly delicate’, but 'the flowers are rather too small, and the effect, as a picture, could be improved by the introduction of some larger ones, so as to give more boldness to the group’.
