photographer and painter, began taking photos with a Box Brownie gift aged 12. She converted the cellar of her home into a darkroom and studio. She was the first woman to study architecture at the University of Adelaide. She married and, as Esther Baylis, moved to Victoria. As a member of a woman’s art group called The Gropers, painting took over from photography as her major interest. Her pictorialist photograph of Hahndorf (cows and gumtrees) is very Hans Heysenish and was taken near his home in 1925. It was purchased by the AGSA the same year.
