monumental mason, claimed in a 1901 advertisement to have trained in Europe (there is some speculation this was from 1858-60) before setting up as a monumental mason at Ballarat in 1880. He was then advertising from Creswick Road, 'bluestone, granite and marble masonry, engraving, carving and sculpture’ as well as 'City and Garden sculpture’. He stated that he had been commissioned to carve a Celtic marble cross 16 ft high for 'SFO’ (It is unknown what SFO refers to but there is some suggestion it could mean San Francisco) and four allegorical figures, each 12 ft high, for £2,100 to crown the front of Parliament House, Melbourne, although the latter had been postponed – apparently because of the Depression – and never seems to have eventuated.
