cartographer and sailor, kept a log-book on board the whaling ship Hamilton in 1839-41. It includes two pages 'of the winds, weather, currents’ of the southern coast of Australia, notes on a cruise around New Zealand and a hand-drawn map (mounted on the page containing entries for 8-13 June 1830) annotated: 'The ships Hamilton of Bridgeport and Julian of N. Bedford lay at anchor in Goose Island Bay from June 7th to September 20th 1840 and obtained 1200 lbs Black oil’. The map features pictures of the bay, such as Sand Bight and Middle Island.
