Born 'in the bush’ around Lake Gregory c.1935, George Wallaby is a Walmatjari speaker. His traditional country is Lake Gregory, in the area where Sturt Creek and its many tributaries empty into the salt lake. The Dreamings which the artist paints are Wanayarra (Rainbow Snake) which now lives in the many waterholes and creekbeds created by his Dreamtime activities, and Water. He began painting for Warlayirti Artists in 1989 and lives at Mulan. He employs a large stick for his dotting and uses this sparsely on the canvas, then intermingles a variety of motifs in such a way that they are often hidden in a 'trompe d’oeil’ effect. This creates intriguing effects that are suggestive of forces that lie beneath and 'behind’ the land.
