Tracy was born in Ireland. After arriving in Australia, he joined his brother and a small party to prospect for gold in Adelaide. His only known works are four small, naive paintings of the Castlemaine goldfields.

Sketcher, gold-digger and dentist, Tracy was born in Ipswich, Suffolk, England. A son of John Tracy, dentist, and Mary Tracy, née Fife. He probably came to Melbourne by ship in 1852 and then travelled around the goldfields of Victoria. It was during this time that he produced a number of small drawings depicting gold fields life. George Wingfield Tracy’s art works include four small, naive paintings of the Castlemaine goldfields: My Tent, 1852 , Diamond Gully, 1853 , McIvor, 1854 and Anderson’s Creek, New Caledonia 1855 (Pioneers and Old Residents Association, Castlemaine). A small sketch book containing some 84 drawings is held by the State Library of Victoria. Tracy returned to his profession of dentistry and practised for many years in Castlemaine. Tracy died 9th May 1883 at Barkers Creek near Castlemaine, Victoria.
