portrait painter, came to Melbourne some time in the 1840s from Dundee, Scotland, to join his sister Barbara and her husband, William Andrews, who had emigrated in 1839 in the John Barry . Another sister, Janet, writing from Dundee on 29 January 1855, said she had heard that Elder had made money from his art in Victoria, but he had died in October 1853, soon after his return to Scotland, some pounds in her debt for 'bed, board, washing and attendance’. She was hoping the chief secretary’s office might enquire into his affairs in the colony and send her any money he had left behind. Nothing appears to have been done.
