The Crafts Council of New South Wales was established in 1964 as Australia’s first Craft Association, taking on the name formally in 1965. From 1995 to 2000, it was known as the Centre for Contemporary Craft. The name ‘Object’ was introduced in 1998 and, in 2000, the byline 'Australian Centre for Craft and Design' was added. The current name is Object: Australian Design Centre.
