A well known artist, H.H. Smith started teaching in Ballarat from December 1905. After a technological commission all earlier Ballarat art schools were closed, and the Ballarat Technical Art School was created as a division of the Ballarat School of Mines. Harold H. Smith was appointed Principal from from 1907 to 1940, and joint Principal of the Ballarat School of Mines from 1914-1916.
