sketcher, was the third daughter of Eliza and William Paton of Belmont Cottage, Longford, Van Diemen’s Land, younger sister of Eliza Ryder (b. 1823) and Maryanne Astley Paton . A substantial album filled with work attributed to Harriet is dated 1839, when she would have been only eleven. These watercolour and pencil sketches, including still life, animal and life studies, buildings, landscapes and mythological subjects, show considerable maturity and some at least would seem to be by her elder sister(s) even if the album was completed later. Subsequent works, all natural history paintings, are attributed either to Harriet or Eliza. All are held privately.
