draughtsman, etcher and lithographer, worked in Adelaide during the late 1850s and 1860s. His pen lithograph North & South Adelaide (Rex Nan Kivell Collection, National Library of Australia [NLA]) is inscribed 'Aug Stein gr: v. H. Berger’ and 'Nach der Natur – gez: v. H. Berger’, suggesting he had a German clientele. The print is not dated but both '1860’ and '1866’ have subsequently been added (the former is given by NLA). Other lithographs such as the Wreck of the Admella (1859) are inscribed in English. At the January 1863 exhibition of the South Australian Society of Arts Berger submitted a design for the society’s medal for which Benham , Hill , Minchin , Schramm and Weidenbach were also competing; the winner was Minchin.

Another of Berger’s lithographs of the 1860s, Adelaide from Montefiore Hill (Mortlock Library), is a panorama of the city surrounded by inset individual views of important buildings and business premises. Similarly, his lithographed view of Port Adelaide has seven inset buildings, three above and four below the map, while another map of South Adelaide is surmounted by 16 views of buildings. The two last, which have been dated 1864, give Berger’s address as Pulteney Street. Directories for 1867 and 1869 list him at Stephen’s Place, Adelaide.
