sketcher, was the younger daughter of James Crear RN and his wife Johannah, who settled in Van Diemen’s Land with their four children in 1831. Helen’s sister Johannah also sketched and their drawings are difficult to distinguish. Helen worked in pencil, chalk and watercolours, depicting scenes such as Sandy Bay , The Rock, Tasmania and houses and homesteads including Near New Town, Tasmania and her own home, Clynevale . Helen Crear died on 22 November 1860, aged thirty-three, and was buried in the family plot in the churchyard of Kirklands Presbyterian Chapel, near Campbell Town, Tasmania. Most of her known work consists of pages from a sketchbook (National Library of Australia).
