Mathews began his exhibition career in Melbourne at Riddell's Art Gallery as early as 1939 following study at the National Gallery School. He continued to exhibit with the Melbourne Contemporary Artists group. An exhibition at Macquarie Galleries, Sydney, 1941, also shows 38 pictures by an "H. Mathews".
