professional photographer, took over H. Anson and W.A. Francis 's Adelaide Photographic Institution in 1867. Initially he seems to have renamed it the 'Adelaide Photographic Company’, even though the original Adelaide Photographic Company was still operating under the management of Frazer Smith Crawford , but he was soon calling the studio by his own name, advertising in the South Australian Almanac and Directory for 1869: 'J. JACKSON, artist photographer, 77 Rundle St., Adelaide. Photographs in the best style and in every known process … N.B. a very large assortment of COLONIAL SCENERY and NATIVES always on hand.’
