painter, was at Sandridge (Port Melbourne) attempting to paint and sell landscapes in 1857, when he exhibited three landscapes with the Victorian Society of Fine Arts at Melbourne Boat Race on the Lower Yarra (oil), Valley of the El Dorado, Ovens District (w/c) and Buffalo Ranges, Winter (w/c). 'Christopher Sly’ ( James Neild ) was hardly encouraging about the last, commenting that it had been 'done with the assistance of the servant-maid, who has used the black lead brush freely, and this ground work heightened up by a few drops of blue ink and a few spots of sealing wax makes a very striking picture’. J. Murphy, described in the Age as a 'local artist’, failed to finish on time his Diorama of the London Season which was due to open at the Polytechnic Hall, Melbourne, on 5 October 1863.
