watercolourist, compiled an album titled J.T. Doyle’s Sketches in Australia (Mitchell Library). It consists of forty-five watercolours dating from about 1854 to 1863 which depict landscape views and incidents from Australian history. Eighteen are initialled 'S.T.G.’ or 'J.T.D.’ and one has both. The album was presented to the Mitchell Library in the 1920s by the Lord Bishop of Waterford and Lismore, Ireland and J.T.D. appears to be the Mr Doyle, 'an Irish barrister’ identified by Sir William Dixson as having drawn an unsigned watercolour view of Watson’s Bay at Sydney in 1863 (Dixson Library). Doyle’s independent works are closely comparable in style to those initialled by S.T. Gill , undoubtedly his teacher.
