painter and illustrator, was born in Sydney, younger brother of the painter Henry J. Crisp . He studied art with J.S. Watkins and Harry Garlick and exhibited with the Royal Art Society from 1901 (in 1902 as J. A. Crips [ sic ]), as well as in the USA where he lived from time to time. He contributed illustrations to USA journals such as Sunset and Wasp and to the Bulletin in Sydney, notably illustrating Henry Lawson’s short stories for the latter. With “Pasquin”, i.e. Donald MacDonald, he illustrated Leonard Henslowe’s Henslowe’s Xmas Annual 1902 (Sydney: Queen Victoria Markets, 1902). In 1926-37 he exhibited with the Printmakers’ Society of California. He was also a member of the Australian Painter-Etchers Society and had work in the 1924 Wembley international exhibition. His paintings were mainly watercolours of landscapes, fauna and birds. Crisp died in Sydney in 1962.
