sketcher, architect, surveyor and mining manager, came to Victoria in the 1850s. By 1857 he was working as an architect in Drummond Street, Ballarat. Known early art works are: a pen-and-ink sketch of Ballarat (1856, Mitchell Library [ML]) from which an engraving was made and exhibited at the 1869 Ballarat Mechanics Institute Exhibition, a pen and wash drawing of the Eureka Monument in Ballarat Cemetery (1858, ML) and a view of Geelong Hospital (1858, La Trobe Library [LT]). Calling himself a mining agent, architect, surveyor, and general mining manager, Butler was working from Hurley Street, Wood’s Point, by 1866. An undated and unsigned watercolour attributed to Butler depicting the Champion of the Seas claim (LT) would relate to his mining work.
Butler was back in Melbourne by October 1868 when he called tenders for the erection of six wooden shops at Emerald Hill (South Melbourne). Later he painted views in New South Wales, including watercolours of Newcastle (n.d., ML) and the Darling River at Bourke (1872, ML).
