Newman is an industrial designer trained at RMIT (1957), then working for Myer Emporium working in store planning and designs for shopping centres. In 1964, he was appointed to manage the Design Centre, Melbourne. The Design Centre movement was an initiate of the Industrial Design Council of Australia (IDCA).
