Jessie Merritt was born in Wantage, Berkshire, England, and migrated to Australia as a child in 1911. She became a stenographer and typiste. In later years she attended the Ballarat Technical Art School in 1938, and was also a student of Max Meldrum. Jessie took private students for art lesson, charging $7.50 for 2 hours in the 1970s. Jessie Merritt was an inaugural member of the Ballarat Society of artists under the leadership of William Bolitho. She also had a two person exhibition at the Victorian Society of Artist wit Dr Sydney Pern.
In 1956 Jessie Merritt’s painting 'Farmyard, Buninyong’ was exhibited in the Commonwealth Bank for the Olympians in Australia during the Melbourne Olympic Games.
She died in 1986, and she was cremated.
