Monumental mason. The Bulletin of 11 August 1891, p.24, noted that the monumental works of Messrs Hanson, Lewis & Co. were:

“...situated at the junction of Bent St and Phillip St, and Elizabeth St, Sydney, and are certainly the most extensive of their kind in the colonies. They form an important branch of a still more important business, as the firm have also extensive works in Melbourne and Adelaide, with a branch in Italy, as a source of supply of marble and the better description of art work in statuary, etc. The firm has been established 12 years. for the last 5 years in Sydney, where they have been particularly successful. In fact, their work is now to be found in all the principal cities and town of Australia, showing that their establishment here met a long-existing want.

The work executed is altogether of a superior description, the best sculptors procurable in the colonies being in continual employment on the premises. There is a large consumption of the beautiful sandstone of our own territory, but the most important substantial and durable work is always done in the celebrated Scotch red or grey granite and world-renowned Carrara marble.

The firm executes work in all parts of the colonies, and will forward designs on application.

Many of these designs, of course, are those which have won fame in England and Italy, and now they are justly popular in Australia. At the works just now may be seen. the historic men of the time – Abraham Lincoln, President Garfield, Ben Disraeli, Charles Dickens etc.”
