portraitist, settler and public servant, arrived at Hobart Town with Lieutenant-Governor Davey in 1812. He was appointed postmaster-general of Van Diemen’s Land and subsequently held various other official positions: naval officer, treasurer of the police fund, provost-marshal, acting sheriff, clerk of council, registrar of deeds and sheriff. He retired from the last in 1841 but continued to live in Hobart until his death on 19 December 1872. In 1820 he had married Harriet, daughter of Surveyor-General George Evans and his first wife, Jennett Melville. An undated pencil sketch of 'an old woman at V.D.L. Copied from a good likeness. Taken by Mr Beamont’ is in the Dixson Library. No other works are known and even in this example it is unclear whether Beamont was the copyist or the original sketcher.
