professional photographer, worked as E.T. Brissenden 's photographic assistant in Nicholas Street, Ipswich, Queensland. He took over the studio at the end of 1858 when Brissenden left for Sydney and renamed it The Old Photographic Gallery. The business lasted only until early 1859, then Bowdich and his son Thomas set up as travelling photographers. While they were at Toowoomba, Thomas Bowdich was reported in the Moreton Bay Courier as having died at Meringandan, north of the town, early in May 1859, aged only 26. After this tragedy John Bowdich seems to have abandoned photography and may have left the country.
