John Colette has background in media production and creative management with a particular emphasis on Digital production. He produced an number of independent videos and new media projects during the 1980s and 1990s. During this time he worked as a designer, incorporating video and photography into his practice. He designed the catalogue for the touring exhibition, An Eccentric Orbit in 1994.
He completed a Master of Fine Arts at UNSW, and made 30 Words for the City an ambitious attempt to put sound and vision together in the form of an interactive book.
He was the Head of the Digital Media department at the Australianl Film Television and Radion School, (AFTRS) and a period leading their engineering team, IT department and managing the school’s capital spend.
He worked as a producer on a number of large scale, digitally delivered visitor experiences, from the development of exhibits at the Museum of Sydney in 1994, to galleries for the National Film and Sound Archive and the National Museum of Australia in 2000.
He was senior lecturer at the University of NSW College of Fine Arts, and established the company pixelmill films during this same period, completing over 100 film and video projects. The production business pixelmill was sold to Macquarie Radio Networks in 2006.
Colette became Chair of Motion Media at Savannah College of Art and Design in 2011.
