painter, decorator and signwriter, produced at least seven transparencies for the Duke of Edinburgh’s visit to Melbourne in 1867 in partnership with T. Harford . The largest and most elaborate seems to have been that displayed on the front of Long’s sewing-machine emporium in Bourke Street, which showed an allegorical figure of Victoria introducing Prince Alfred to 'an Australian pastoral landscape’ complete with Aborigines engaged in a kangaroo and emu hunt and gold-diggers waving an American (sic) flag in greeting. Gillett and Harford normally worked as signwriters and decorators from 85 Russell Street, Melbourne, John Gillett’s home address being 19 Provost Street, Hotham. By 1879 they were advertising as sign and ticket-writers, of 62 Little Collins Street.
