portrait painter, professional photographer and civil servant, was born in Scotland. He is said to have worked as a portrait painter in London before coming to the Darling Downs, Queensland, probably in the late 1840s, as accountant and bookkeeper on the Leslie brothers’ properties ( see G.K.E. Fairholme). In 1856 Haig was appointed the first registrar of births, marriages and deaths for Warwick (Qld) and district. Two years later, he set up concurrently as the town’s portrait painter and photographer. His son Henry (c.1842-1913) was subsequently in partnership with him in the photography business and continued the studio when John died. A fourth generation Haig photographic firm survives at Warwick.
