sketcher and army surgeon, was an assistant surgeon with the Royal Artillery before he spent some time farming in NSW. He was then appointed colonial surgeon of New Zealand, arriving at the Bay of Islands in 1840. No drawings made when he was a NSW resident are known, but drawings and sepia washes in New Zealand public collections include views of Sydney made c.1845 apparently when visiting his son after a trip to England to bring out his daughters. Nevertheless, the bulk of Johnson’s surviving work comprises NZ subjects, including historically significant sketches of the 1840 Auckland settlement.
