professional photographer and settler, was born, according to his death certificate, in Reidbache, Bavaria, son of Valentine Behl, a farmer, and Christina née Schafer. He came to New South Wales in about 1857 and by 1864 was working as a photographer in Elizabeth Street, Sydney. He did not continue long in this profession. That year he married Mary Clark in Sydney and they apparently retired to the south coast. The Behls had three daughters and a son.

When John Behl died at sea of stomach cancer on 23 May 1886, aged fifty years and five months, his son-in-law, Edward Joseph Cornell of Pambula, gave his occupation as 'retired gentleman’. He was buried in the Roman Catholic section of Pambula Cemetery.
