Johnnie Targan was born in Melbourne in 1951 and became actively involved in the visual arts in the 1980s. He began formal art studies in 1998 at the Victorian College of the Arts (VCA) in Melbourne where he gained a Bachelor of Fine Art (2000), a Postgraduate Diploma of Fine Art (2001) and a Master of Visual Art (2002). In 2008 he was a PhD candidate at the VCA’s Centre for Ideas (CFI).

Targan also has a Diploma of Performing Arts from Swinburne College of TAFE (1997) and has acted in television’s Blue Heelers and in the movie Chopper.

In 2001 he was Artist-in-Residence at the Museum of Victoria. He has exhibited in many group and solo exhibitions including a solo at the S.W.A.G. Gallery in North Fitzroy in 2002 and in 1998 at the Rush Bar Gallery.
