Jaunella McKenzie was born in 1990 in Port Augusta, South Australia. Her mother, painter Regina McKenzie, is a Kuyani and Luritja woman and her father is an African-American man.

McKenzie’s aunt, Milly Taylor, and McKenzie’s mother have painted for many years and McKenzie would paint alongside them as a child, learning the stories of the local people from them as she painted.
In 2005 McKenzie showed her acrylic on canvas painting Seven Sisters Dreaming in the exhibition ' Yarta Arts: Contemporary Indigenous art from Flinders Ranges and Marree’ at Arkaba Woolshed (near Wilpena Pound).
In 2007 McKenzie participated in 'Our Mob’ at the Adelaide Festival Centre. In 2008 she exhibited with her mother and John Millard (a non-Aboriginal artist) in the show 'Flinders Ranges Through Our Eyes ' at the Fountain Gallery during the Adelaide Fringe festival.
McKenzie lives near Hawker in the Flinders Ranges in South Australia.
